Parents react to graffiti threat found at Marana Middle School

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Threatening and inappropriate messages discovered on school bathroom stalls prompted some Marana parents to keep their kids home for the day.

On Monday, Lerona Dickson, principal of Marana Middle School (MMS), emailed the community about a string of graffiti incidences that occurred last week in two of the boy’s bathrooms.

One of the statements written on the stalls indicated a school shooting would take place at MMS on December 5.

The Marana Police Department is “unable to substantiate the threat,” according to a letter addressed to MMS parents.

"We didn't want to send him today but we just let him go,” said parent John Wilhelm, whose son attends MMS.

School district officials noted there was an increased police and security presence at MMS on Tuesday (December 5).

Officials encourage parents to talk with their children about the consequences of engaging in such behavior, which can result in violating a number of laws.

Wilhelm stressed the decision wasn’t easy. He did manage to talk with his son about the issue.

"We asked him if he was involved for one, to make sure that stuff like this doesn't happen with him. We don't want him to get in trouble,” Wilhelm said.

People are asked to call the Marana Police Department or school administration if they any information regarding this graffiti incident.
