Arizona ACLU wants volunteers to help in lawsuit vs. Phoenix PD

Posted: Updated:

The ACLU of Arizona is asking the public for help in its lawsuit against the Phoenix Police Department.

The group is looking for volunteers to help go through videos of several confrontations during President Trump’s August speech in Phoenix. The footage was collected from police body cameras and several surveillance cameras.

The ACLU is suing the PPD after officers fired pepper balls and smoke bombs to disperse protesters.

The ACLU says officers stepped over the line.

“The police cannot simply decide that they want to shut down a peaceful protest because they think it’s time for everyone to go home,” said ACLU of Arizona Legal Director Kathy Brody. “That violates the First Amendment.”

City officials say the officers acted appropriately after some protesters allegedly threw their own gas containers at officers.
