Family remembers Los Dorados, Good Friday Cross Procession founder

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - "A giant, he was, he made everyone feel special," Gina Herrera said of her father David who died on November 21 of kidney failure at 96.

Herrera, the founder of Los Dorados Orphan League, started the organization when he came back from World War II and saw a growing number of kids from the barrio in need of help. Antonio Pinarosantibanez was one of them.

"David was my mentor," Pinarosantibanez said. "He was the grandfather I didn't have, he was the father I didn't have. He was everything of who I saw as a man, of who I aspired to be."

Herrera will be long remembered as the founder of an annual pilgrimage up "A" Mountain that became known as the Good Friday procession.

In the last few years, Gina moved down to Arizona from San Francisco to be closer to her dad.

"I thought he needed me, but now that he's gone I realized I needed him," she said.

"96-year-old man, he did more for this world than anybody ever has," Antonio said. "There's not a person who could match his heals."

Herrera's funeral begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carrillo's Tucson Mortuary. It is open to the public.
