4 Your Health: Holiday shopping tips to keep your little ones safe

Posted: Updated:

As you head out to take advantage of holiday shopping sales experts at Vanderbilt University have some tips on how to pick out safe gifts for the little ones on your list.

If you are buying toys be sure they are age appropriate. Avoid items with small pieces or long cords for children under three because they can pose a choking hazard. Also check that there are no broken parts, chipped paint or sharp edges.

Choose crayons, markers and other art supplies that are non-toxic.

Electronics can*also pose safety hazards

Each year, more than 28,000 children visit the ER after swallowing lithium batteries. With that in mind, keep remotes, watches, jewelry and other items with button batteries away from small children. And if your family is getting a new TV, mount it to the wall to prevent tipping.

Toys to avoid

Experts said there are some toys you stay clear of altogether.

Projectile air rockets, darts, and slingshots are not recommended for any age, especially young children. BB guns should also not be considered toys because children need to be properly trained and supervised while using any type of gun.

And charging batteries should always be supervised by an adult. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.
