Posted: Updated:

The 2017 Heroes Day award ceremony was held today.

It happened this morning at La Encantada courtyard, AT 2805 e. Skyline Drive.

Among the award recipients was Casa Grande Firefighter Jacob Celaya. Firefighter Celaya was enjoying a family barbeque at Canyon Lake when he heard someone screaming for their life, about 60ft from the shore. He immediately rushed into action rescuing the 18-year-old man and swimming him back to shore. Celaya performed chest compressions and rescue breathing before more first responders could arrive.

Northwest Fire Department’s Firefighter Jarrett Murray, was on his way home from a long shift when he noticed the smoke of a vehicle off the side of the road. Murray and another Good Samaritan helped pull an elderly couple from the burning vehicle.

Tucson Fire Department Engineer Christopher Spurr was visiting family in New Mexico when he came upon a high-speed chase. He drove by the vehicles down the road, when he noticed the New Mexico State Trooper in distress. There had been an obvious altercation. Spurr helped seize the suspect and provided medical assistance to the trooper.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit were dispatched to Tanque Verde Falls, where they found a man and a 4-year-old child in the middle of a flooded river. There were several flash floods in the area at that time. The man had the child on his shoulders.

Heroes Day honorable mentions went to Tucson Fire Departments paramedic Brendan Nostrant and Tucson Police Department’s Sergeant Brian Kowalski and Officer Joshua Castorela.
