Officials are adding mesh paneling along the border fence in Nogales, in an attempt to deter smugglers from passing drugs and other items through the fence.
The mesh is already in place on certain parts of the fence, which sits along West International Street. And the next phase of the plan will see seven hundred more feet added.
The plan has drawn some criticism from people who meet at the fence to embrace loved ones that live across the border.
Octavio Salazar is a Nogales native and former Marine who understands both sides of the argument.
”It does deter people from seeing their family members, from touching their family members,” he said. “But the wall is there for a reason. It’s there to protect our borders.”
Salazar supports the additions to the fence, but thinks it will take a lot more than mesh to secure the border.
“I just wish there was more of a presence, of a military presence on these borders,” he said. “I think that would deter much more crime.”
