Five people arrested in 3 human smuggling attempts

Tucson, Ariz. – Tucson Sector Border Patrol Agents arrested five people in three human smuggling attempts over the weekend, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Agents from the Willcox and Ajo stations stopped a 20-year-old woman from Phoenix at an immigration checkpoint on State Route 80 near Tombstone, on Friday, according to a news release.

Border Patrol officials said the agents searched the woman’s Honda Civic and found a 23-year-old Mexican man inside the trunk of the vehicle.

The woman was arrested by Border Patrol agents on human smuggling charges and her vehicle was seized, according to CBP.

The release stated, on Sunday, agents stopped two teenagers from Phoenix at the same checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to the trunk of the Honda Accord the teenagers were driving, according to CBP.

Agents opened the trunk and found a 25-year-old Mexican man inside and the teenagers were arrested on human smuggling charges, according to a news release.

According to CBP, that same night, Border Patrol agents stopped a man and woman at an immigration checkpoint on State Route 85 near Ajo, Ariz.

Border Patrol agents said they learned the male passenger entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico. The female driver was arrested on human smuggling charges, according to CBP.

According to CBP, all three Mexican nationals are being processed on immigration violations.
