N4T Investigators: Salon Shutdown leaves concerned customers

Posted: Updated:

A long-time beauty salon in Sierra Vista that was recently taken over by a new owner is now apparently shut-down. The entire situation has left some former employees and would-be customers upset.

“Heck yeah! I was so looking forward to it. I mean, I work hard,” Sierra Vista resident, Jackie Lippincott told the News 4 Tucson Investigators.

Jackie is talking about what should have been a spa-day to remember. Her mother-in-law bought Jackie a $275 gift card to Today's Look Salon and Day Spa, in Sierra Vista. The card included a facial, massage, hair treatment, manicure and pedicure, and even lunch. However, Jackie told the News 4 Tucson Investigators, when she called the salon to book her appointment, instead she got a disconnected number.

“I posted on Facebook asking what had happened, and a lot of people responded saying they had closed their doors unexpectedly,” Jackie told the News 4 Tucson Investigators.

When the News 4 Tucson Investigators went to Sierra Vista to see for ourselves, we also found a locked door at the salon during posted business hours. We also found a note posted by the landlord on the front door.

“A lot of people recommended going there, so I didn't expect them to really ever close. They seemed to be pretty good,” Jackie told the News 4 Tucson Investigators.

Jackie is not alone. The News 4 Tucson Investigators heard from other Today's Look customers who told us that they have been left with worthless gift cards.

“I was very shocked, and kind of disappointed, because I wanted really wanted to get my hair done,” said Brandy S., who received a gift card for Today’s Look from her husband for Valentine’s Day. “I reached out to the owner on Facebook at first, just to see if there was something, if she would even respond. Unfortunately she didn't,” Brandy told the News 4 Tucson Investigators.

The News 4 Tucson also got a disconnected number when we tried to contact the business via telephone. The same thing happened when we attempted to call the salon's owner, who we located via public records. One former salon employee also emailed us, saying they hadn't been paid and were complaining to state labor officials.

Meantime, customers tell the News 4 Tucson Investigators they are unable to get a refund from the gift card company, and now feel they have no place left to turn.

“I then reached out to my credit card that we made the purchase with, and unfortunately couldn't help me either because they said they couldn't prove that the card hadn't been used,” Brandy told the News 4 Tucson Investigators. “I understand that circumstances happen to people, but I think that there are a lot of people out there that have money on gift cards that are going to be, you know, wasted at this point,” she added.

“$275 is a lot of money I think for any person, so I would like to. But, realistically I'm probably not going to get a refund for that,” Jackie told the News 4 Tucson Investigators.
