Jack In The Box Player of the Week: Elijah Carey

Posted: Updated:

For many years now, Canyon Del Oro High School has had a Carey getting backfield carries and carrying the Dorado's to plenty of success.

"Both of those kids mean a lot to this community, they have so much personality, happy people, easy to be around and people love to be around them," CDO's Assistant Coach Matt Powell said.

Elijah Carey, the younger brother of Ka'Deem Carey, is starting to come into his own as one of the best backs in Southern Arizona.

"It's been great trying to take every opportunity i can, trying to win as many games as we can. It's been fun so far," Elijah Carey said.

His best game - a 206 yard, five touchdown effort against Walden Grove that saved CDO's playoff hopes on Friday night.

"The line opened up big holes throughout the game for me, Zach throwing good balls really opened up the running game and we had a great week of practice which helped us play good in the game," Carey said.

And now late into his senior year, Carey is starting to get attention from colleges.

"Going ok, little slow, but patience is a virtue, people are telling me they're gonna come in but I'm grateful for the offer I got from ACU," Carey said.

Arizona Christian University offered him this week, the first of likely many late offers.

"He's a late bloomer, if he was an 11th grader right now i think he'd be getting a lot of interest, I'd definitely tell a college coach to take a chance on him, he's still developing he's going to get better and better," Assistant Coach Powell said.

Carey is young for his grade, and the baby brother of one of Tucson's best ever. But make no mistake, he's here to leave his own mark.

"We're striving for the playoffs, we're going to work harder and harder every game to win out every game," Carey said.
