What city was the warmest place in America yesterday?

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - It wasn't record heat. It wasn't a late 100° day. But it was the warmest temperature recorded in the country.

According to 4WARN Meteorologist Jeff Beamish, Tucson International Airport reached 99° yesterday. This was the highest temperature recorded in the Lower 48. Thursday's high came in shy of the record of 101° set back in 1917, but was 11° above the seasonal average.

Temperatures are slated to slowly climb down the ladder this weekend & early next week. A series of storm systems pass north of the Sonoran Desert, dropping highs into the low to mid 90s today through Thursday. Ample sunshine is in the forecast.

While temperatures still run above normal for early to mid October, overnight lows return to Fall standards. Metro Tucson bottoms out in the upper 50s to low 60s starting tonight. Portions of Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties may wake up to the 40s during this timeframe.

Watch Jeff for a complete look at your 4WARN extended forecast today at noon. Follow Jeff's weather updates on FacebookTwitter and his blog.
