UPDATE: Suspect, deputy identified in South Side shooting, carjacking

A suspect has been identified as the suspect in Wednesday's carjacking. 

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said he Elijah Jamal Lawrence, 24, is in critical condition at Banner University Medical Center.

Sgt. Kevin Kubitskey, an 18-year veteran of the department, was the deputy involved in the shooting in the case.

He was placed on administrative leave, which is customary in these types of cases.


A South Side carjacking on Wednesday, Oct. 4, lead to shots fired. 

The Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of an armed robbery and kidnapping in the 4100 block of East Dover Stravenue just before 2 p.m. 

PCSD also received information that the suspect attempted to steal a car at one home, was unsuccessful and then moved onto another home on the same street. 

The suspect held a man at gunpoint and took the victim hostage while he stole his car. Meanwhile, TPD was investigating a carjacking incident near Valencia and I-10, authorities were able to determine the incidents were connected.

The stolen vehicle was located by deputies near East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way, the suspect then pointed the gun at a deputy at a traffic stop. Deputies pursued the suspect until East Aviation Parkway and East 34th Street, according to PCSD.

The suspect ran the car into a median and then pointed the gun at the hostage, at this point shots were fired and the suspect was wounded. 

The suspect was detained and taken to Banner UMC to be treated. 

Initial investigations by PCSD reveal one deputy fired at the suspect, all authorities were uninjured.
