Mystery couple regularly pays the bills for unsuspecting Applebee's diners

Posted: Updated:

If you're a fan of movies like "Miracle on 34th Street" or "Pay It Forward," you might just think these tales about little acts of kindness are mere escapes from the real world.

However, you'd be mistaken to think real do-gooders only live on the silver screen.

Just ask the patrons at one Applebee's restaurant in Washington, Pennsylvania where an anonymous couple that eats there several times a week has reportedly been paying the bills for unsuspecting diners for "years," according to KDKA-TV.

According to the managers at the Applebee's located in the suburban-Pittsburgh area, the couple owns a local business and decides to randomly pay for customers' meals about two or three times per month.

Jolie Welling, a recent recipient of the bill fairies' generosity, told TODAY Food, "This has never happened to me personally before. I always hear of it happening and was so shocked it took place and what better way then for my daughter Sofia's sixth birthday."

Much more than just a birthday surprise, Welling says, "This random act of kindness makes me ... reassured there are good people in this world.

"It also was good that my daughter Sofia got to see the goodness in people."

Welling told WTAE that when it came time to settle the bill for the full party of 16 people, she was informed that it was already taken care of and they all "started tearing up."

Though Bernie Lewis, an assistant manager at the Applebee's, is sworn to secrecy about the couple's identity, she told KDKA-TV that the gentleman did mention that he "'grew up poor and now I'm not,' and that is all he says."

Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen strangers foot the bill for unsuspecting restaurant patrons. But in Washington, the anonymous couple is reportedly starting some inspiring changes.

Says Welling, "We ... plan to pay it forward and surprise a family when we go out to eat!"
