Dirty water warning denied

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - When a water main breaks nearby it's pretty common for dirty water to make it into your home following a repair but one east side resident is fed up with not being notified before it's too late.

Like most people, Tom D'Angelo fills his coffee pot every morning, little did he know he was using dirty, murky water straight from the tap.

D’Angelo said in a side by side test you can barely tell the dirty water from clean water in a glass he only noticed the issue when he filled a white five gallon bucket.

“I saw how dirty it was and said something is wrong and that's when I called water emergency,” said D’Angelo.

Tucson Water told him silt had likely made it into the line from a recent water main break but he said he has issues several times a year.

“I always have to be concerned that fresh dirt with bacteria and everything got into the line and that's being spread around,” said D’Angelo.

He understands that dirt in the water lines does happen, especially with all the east side construction, he would just like a heads up when it's coming.

“They had time to let us know, I didn't discover it until around midnight,” said D’Angelo.

Fernando Molina with Tucson Water says these notifications have been a challenge but they are working on getting more information out to their customers via social media and their website.

“We're talking about several different work groups,” said Molina. “So we need to streamline our communication process so we can be more effective in getting that information out.”

If you do notice the murky water in your home before it’s too late you can do a flush of your own.

“Go to the spigot and just turn that on for a minute or two just until you can see that the water clears up,” said Molina.

If you have an issue with water quality, the number to call is (520) 791-5945.
