Friday Football Fever: Wrapup Week 4

Posted: Updated:

Welcome to week 4, where some teams in Southern Arizona are reaching the halfway mark and we separate the contenders from the teams who might have to make a late run to get in the playoffs.

Rincon 49, Rio Rico 14

Rincon made a change at quarterback this week, bringing in Roman McDowell to play the position and it paid off handsomely. The supremely athletic #1 ran all over Rio Rico to help the Rangers secure the team's first win of the year. The Hawks saw the return of star player Ricky Perez, who has missed the first four games of the season after recovering from testicular cancer. Just one week after his final chemotherapy treatment, Perez caught 3 passes for 70 yards, and scored a rushing touchdown. Keep a lookout for a big story on Perez coming out soon.

Mountain View 42, Tucson 20

Bam McRae's Mountain Lions showed an explosive offense to go along with their regularly stout defense with an impressive win over 6A Tucson High.

Walden Grove 40, Pueblo 8

Pueblo's undefeated season gets stopped by the Red Wolves, who were able to shut down Pueblo's impressive backfield of two previous Jack in the Box Player of the Week winners.

Salpointe Catholic 38, Sunnyside 15

Dennis Bene's Lancer squad might be the best team in all of Class 4A, taking down 6A squad Sunnyside. Salpointe has never had trouble competing with the big boys and took a 24-0 lead early before coasting to a win. Bijan Robinson didn't jump over anybody, but had a big game nonetheless.

Cienega 49, Flowing Wells 0

Cienega continues its tear through Southern Arizona, proving to possibly be the best team in the area and a team to beat in 5A. The Bobcats took down Flowing Wells thanks to Jamarye Joiner, Terrell Huggins (who had a pick-6) and Terrell Hayward. This is a complete team.

Sabino 35, Tanque Verde 0

The Sabercats continue to roll as Alex Bell leads Sabino to a big win over Tanque Verde. Credit the Sabercat defense who recovered from giving up 41 points last week to pitch the shutout.

Cholla 62, Palo Verde 23

Jordan Porter ran all over Palo Verde as Cholla got back to its winning ways with a blowout over the Titans. Ryan Scherling's squad is sitting at 3-2 and in good position to make a run at the 5A playoffs.

Catalina Foothills 18, Empire 12 (OT)

300! Legendary Hall of Fame high school coach Jeff Scurran won his 300th game in exciting fashion as Chris Kowalcek, a 2017 Jack in the Box Player of the Week, ran in a touchdown to give the Falcons the win. Scurran's squad came back from a 12-0 deficit to score the final 18 points of the game.

Canyon Del Oro 69, Amphi 8

Elijah Carey ran all over Amphi as the Dorados had no trouble taking down Amphi at home. Dustin Peace's team is 3-1 heading into an important stretch of the season.

Sahuaro 20, Desert View 0

Cookie Denson and Goddy Amon-Ra led Sahuaro to scoring 20 on Desert View, but it was the Cougar defense who stood strong to shut out Desert View.
