What history says about this September's sizzling temps

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON – Triple digit heat should be on the outs in September, but 2017 is bucking the odds.

Wednesday’s high of 102° marked the 68th triple digit day of 2017. It also is Tucson’s 10th triple digit day of September, according to 4WARN Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. Tucson’s average number of 100°+ September days is 7.

September 2017 has featured the most 100°+ days in four years. Back in September 2013, Tucson peaked in triple digit territory 10 times.

Tucson’s all-time record for most September 100°+ days is 16, set in 2010 and 1953.

Based on history, Tucson’s odds for a 100° day in early September are roughly 20%. By the end of the month, those odds crash to around 5%.
