Hurricane Irma becomes the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin

Posted: Updated:

There have been four other storms matching Irma's strength but these have occurred in either the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico - where the waters are generally warmer than the Atlantic Basin. Irma has obtained much of her fuel from the unusually warmer waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane Allen hit 190 mph in 1980, while 2005's Wilma, 1988's Gilbert and a 1935 great Florida Key storm all had 185 mph winds.
