Friday Football Fever: Wrapup Week 2

Posted: Updated:

Welcome to week 2, where southern Arizona high school football had some big matchups.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Pusch Ridge 37, Walden Grove 7

The Lions came into Sahuarita hungry for victory and jumped out to a 21-0 lead behind quarterback Christian Fetsis and running back Tamerat McLeod. Pusch Ridge held on in a solid second half on their way to victory. The Lions are shaping up to be a state title contender in 3A.

Marana 42, McClintock 13

After an 0-2 start, Marana picked up a win. That 0-2 start is a bit misleading since the losses are to 5A title contenders Ironwood Ridge and Cienega, but it's good to see Andy Litten's team in the win column. Marana's explosive offense did its thing, and the defense was outstanding.

Cienega 51, Shadow Ridge 6

The Bobcats are 2-0 after a standout performance from all sides of the ball. Reigning Jack in the Box Player of the Week Jamarye Joiner had a big game as did wide receiver Terrell Hayward who scored three times, in three ways. Hayward caught a long TD pass, returned a long interception for a touchdown and returned a punt for a touchdown.

Ironwood Ridge 41, Nogales 7

Heath Beemiller led the Nighthawks to victory on the road against Nogales with some impressive passing and rushing. Nick Brahler was a beast on the ground and the Nighthawk defense held the Apache offense scoreless. The only blemish for I-Ridge was a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown from Eric Montano of Nogales, who earned KVOA's Play of the Week.

Catalina Foothills 56, Cholla 25

Catalina Foothills improves to 2-1 with an impressive win over an upstart Cholla team. The very young Falcons were impressive on offense behind quarterback Chris Kowalcek, who replaces current Arizona QB Rhett Rodriguez. Cholla drops to 2-1, but playoff hopes are still alive behind Week 0 Jack in the Box Player of the Week Jordan Porter.

Mountain View 63, Rincon 0

Mountain View recovered from a blowout loss against Salpointe with a 63-0 win over Rincon. The Mountain Lions are a very young team and look to improve throughout the season.

Flowing Wells 33, Amphi 0

Amphi's struggles continue as Flowing Wells put it to them at Friedli Field. The Caballeros defense shut out the Panthers, and the combination of Dylan Allison and Thor Martinez through the air pushed the offense along.

Maricopa 33, Desert View 20

Desert View takes its first loss of the season to a school outside of the viewing area. Maricopa moved the ball well against the Jaguar defense.
