Friday Football Fever: Jack in the Box Player of the Week - August 25

Posted: Updated:

Cienega quarterback Jamarye Joiner is arguably the best player in Southern Arizona, and in his senior year, he's still getting even better.

"In passing, I've improved my footwork," said Joiner, who has also gotten faster over the off season.

His improved passing reads found their way into the hands of Cienega receivers for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns on Friday night in a 57-50 win over Marana.

"He's really gotten better at the mental side of the passing game," said Cienega head coach Pat Nugent.

Nugent also referred to Joiner's "freak" running skills and on the ground Joiner did not disappoint. He ran for 170 yards and five touchdowns for a total of seven.

Late in the game, down 50-49 with 1:22 left on the clock, nobody had a doubt Joiner would come through.

"I never once got nervous in that game, said Nugent. "With Jamarye Joiner on your team we knew we could get down there, it's just a matter of getting a touchdown or a field goal."

The Cienega star is committed to play at Arizona, although several Pac-12 schools are interested and have offered. But, Joiner is sticking with his commitment to the Wildcats.

"There's just like a real family bonding there," said Joiner of Arizona.

For now, he looks to lead Cienega back to the playoffs.
