Tucson Living: Tire safety

Posted: Updated:

The heat that comes with living in Arizona can not only be hard on people, but also our cars.

John Coker, a manager with Discount Tire, said that heat always expedites the wear on tires. Making sure you have enough air in them is both the most critical and easiest way to care for them.

Coker said it's best to make sure you are checking air pressure and looking at tire tread at least once a month. The tread of the tires can be check very easily using the penny test at home.

Many automotive shops, including Discount Tire, offer free tire inspections if you are uncomfortable checking them yourself. It is also important to rotate your tires on a regular basis. That way the tread will wear evenly.

Discount Tire recommends having your tired rotated about every six thousand miles.  Coker said that many tire manufactures recommend replacing tires every six years. Even if the tires are on a vehicle that does not get used often.
