4 Your Health: obesity and heart disease; questioning health benefits of marijuana

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- A major review of research finds little evidence medical marijuana can treat certain conditions.

The U.S. department of veterans affairs reviewed data from 27 clinical trials of cannabis to treat chronic pain. While there was some evidence it may relieve pain from nerve damage said they couldn't make any firm conclusions on marijuana's effect on other types of chronic pain.

A separate review of cannabis to treat PTSD also found little evidence it works.

Excessive weight and heart attacks

A new study from the U.K. finds carrying extra weight may raise the risk of a heart attack even in people who are otherwise in shape. Researchers looked at data on more than a half million people in 10 European countries.

Overall, those considered overweight, or obese, had a higher risk of heart disease. This held true even when they had healthy measures of blood pressure and cholesterol.
