Cleanup underway after Thursday's microburst

TUCSON -

Cleanup efforts are underway on the East side after Thursday’s microburst storm ripped through the neighborhood.

Alex Ortiz just bought his home, near 4th and Kent, three weeks ago. Thursday afternoon, a nearby tree uprooted and landed in his front yard.

“It almost felt like a tornado,” he said. “Out of nowhere, it turned grey. And just boom, trees fell. All the power lines came down and landed in our pool.”

Even city officials said this storm was one for the books.

“This is exceptional,” said the City’s Deputy Director of Environmental Services, Pat Tapia. “We don't see too many microbursts hit inside the city of Tucson. Primarily, they're outside.”

The city is offering help to residents with damage by providing a clean-up service for curbside debris. There is a fee for this service.

“We just want to be able to help out in any way we can [by] providing services to haul that debris away once it's actually cut up and ready for removal,” he said.

To schedule a pick-up, call 520-791-3171.
