FC Tucson to host playoff games this Friday & Saturday

Posted: Updated:

FC Tucson's soccer team will host playoff games this Friday and potentially Saturday.  Here's more from the FC Tucson website:

FC Tucson will play the Fresno Fuego Friday, July 21st at 8:00 p.m. in the Premier Development League Western Conference Semifinals at Kino North Stadium.

After earning the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference with the highest point total, the Golden State Force will play the winner of a play-in game between Foothills FC and Timbers U23 at 6:00 p.m. Friday.

The winners of those matches will play in the Western Conference Final Saturday, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at Kino.

Tucson clinched a playoff berth after winning the Mountain Division, the club’s fourth consecutive division title. This will also mark FC Tucson’s fourth consecutive time hosting the playoffs.

After winning the Southwest Division with 33 points overall, the Golden State Force clinched the No. 1 seed in the West, clipping the Fuego with 32 points.

The Californian sides have been goalscoring machines in 2017, with each club netting 45 goals during the regular season, more than any other teams in the conference and the third-highest tally in the country.

Up North, Foothills FC out of Calgary will travel to Portland to take on Timbers U23 for the Northwest Division play-in game, with the winner joining the other three teams in Tucson.

The Timbers clinched the Northwest Division title on the last day of the season with a 3-0 win over Lane United on the road, while Calgary were held to a 1-1 draw against Highlanders FC from Victoria.

It looked as though Calgary would collect their second straight division title, but those plans were thwarted when former FC Tucson player Francesco Bartolillo scored in the 90th minute for the Highlanders.

Bartolillo was a member of last year’s squad that fell to Foothills in the Western Conference Final here in Tucson.

Tucson finishes the season out on a 10 game unbeaten streak, stretching back to May 25th after the team fell 2-1 on the road to Colorado Rapids U23 after a late penalty.

Since then, the Men in Black have been on a tear, scoring 26 goals while conceding just nine over the course of nine PDL matches. The team also added a 4-2 win over the Las Vegas Mobsters in a friendly on June 10th.

“We’re excited to play Fresno,” FC Tucson head coach Jon Pearlman said. “They’re a fantastic franchise that we have a long history with, and I can’t wait for Friday in front of a packed home crowd.”

Season ticket holders will receive free admission to Friday’s double-header and will also receive a discounted ticket to Saturday’s Western Conference Final.
