Arizona introduces new swimming coach Augie Busch

Posted: Updated:

With a cheer from friends and family, and an impassioned speech about the merits of the hire from Athletic Director Dave Heeke, the University of Arizona introduced its new swimming and diving coach, Augie Busch.

Busch is the son of legendary coach Frank Busch, who led both the men's and women's teams to NCAA Championships in 2008. The younger Busch represents the first significant hire by Arizona's relatively new athletic director.

Heeke said the university talked to a large group of people, but all signs kept point back to the former Arizona swimmer and assistant coach in Busch.

Heeke also made a statement about how he views head coaching jobs at Arizona.

"This is a destination job, this is a destination place." said Heeke. "Our head coaching jobs at the University of Arizona are destination spots."

Busch talked about how difficult of a decision he had to make leaving the University of Virginia, the school he spent four years at, including the final two bringing top five NCAA finishes to the women's team.

After consulting with his father, whose pragmatism Busch praised, Augie joked it was "emotion" that ultimately weighed in his decision to come back home to Tucson.

"Not a lot of people in any industry get a chance at their dream job," said Busch. "And that's exactly what this is."
