4 Your Health: Keys to seniors living independently; cancer's link to Parkinson's disease

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- A new study confirms a link between Parkinson's disease and the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The Mayo Clinic reports people with the neurological movement disorder have a much higher risk for melanoma.

What's more, having melanoma can also increase the risk for Parkinson's. It's unclear what's driving the link.

Doctors say patients with either condition should be monitored closely for the other disease.

Staying independent

Swedish investigators reportedly have found the keys to living independently late in life.

They studied more than a thousand men, mostly in their late 60's and early 70's.

The men were more likely to keep up with daily activities and keep their minds sharp well into their 80's,  if they never smoked, adhered to a Mediterranean diet and maintained a healthy weight.
