4 Your Health: People walking more; children not as allergic to penicillin

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- Many children who have a suspected penicillin allergy are not actually allergic to the drug.

Researchers from the Medical College Of Wisconsin studied nearly 600 children labeled with a penicillin allergy. They then tested 100 children who appeared to be at the lowest risk, based on their symptoms. All of them tested negative and had the allergy removed from their medical records.

Experts say itches and rashes caused by an infection are often mistaken for a penicillin allergy.

Americans getting out and walking more

New government data shows a steady increase in walking over the past decade for both transportation and leisure. Experts said walking is an easy way for people to get exercise.

They suggest communities find ways to encourage walking through street design, parks and walking trails.
