Astros draft Arizona baseball's Matijevic

Posted: Updated:

The Houston Astros drafted Arizona Wildcats first baseman J.J. Matijevic with the 75th overall pick in the 2017 MLB First Year Player Draft.

Matijevic hit .383 with 10 home runs 65 RBI for the Wildcats in his junior season, and placed on the All-Pac-12 team. Matijevic made 2nd team All-America via College Baseball News.

The Astros drafted Matijevic as a second baseman, a position he tried out this season, but ended up mainly at first. Matijevic played shortstop in high school in Pennsylvania.

The left-handed hitter goes to the Astros because of a hacking scandal. Houston had the 75th pick due to compensation for a St. Louis Cardinals employee stealing proprietary scouting information from the Astros database.

If Matijevic were to sign with Houston -- and it seems likely -- his signing bonus will be around $767,000, according to MLB draft slot amounts.
