UA's Sage Watson advances to finals with fastest time in US

Posted: Updated:

Former Olympian and U of A senior Sage Watson had a memorial day at the NCAA Championships.  Here's more from Arizona Athletics:

Sage Watson clocked the fastest time in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. today, giving her a spot in Saturday’s finals. The women's 4x400-meter relay team also earned honorable mention All-America honors.

“I’m so proud of Sage,” head coach Fred Harvey said. “Her time of 54.82 was huge, but I think the bigger thing was how she handled the delay between the first and second sections. She ran like a real professional and looked very comfortable. I think we will see some really big things on Saturday.”

Watson’s time of 54.88 was the third-fastest time of her career and was .05 seconds off her personal best. Additionally, it was the fastest time in the semifinals is also tied for the 13th-fastest in the world. She will run in her second-consecutive finals at 4:47 p.m. MST on Saturday afternoon.

In the women’s 4x400-meter relay, the team of Diana Gajda, Brena Andrews, Jasper Gray and Malia Bryant clocked a time of 3:41.37 in the semifinals, good for 23rd place. Bryant took Watson’s spot shortly before the race took place. The team did not qualify for the finals, but they did earn honorable mention All-American accolades. They are the first women’s 4x400-meter relay team to earn All-America honors since Shapri Romero, Echos Blevins, Tamara Pridgett and Georganne Moline were first-team All-Americans back in 2012.

Tomorrow will feature Justice Summerset in the finals of the men’s high jump and Bailey Roth in the finals of the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Complete results and heat sheets can be found on ArizonaWildcats.com. The meet will be aired live on the ESPN family of networks as well.
