4 your health: Patient advocates bedside and beyond

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- A patient advocate is someone who provides medical expertise and who represents a patient while they're receiving treatment at a care facility or a hospital. These advocates are now part of a growing trend as healthcare becomes more and more complicated and being a devoted family member is no longer enough when a loved one is ill.

Lois Pittenger vividly recalls a recent visit to the emergency room where representatives from Patient Care advocates were waiting for her.

"When the ambulance came, took me to the hospital, they were there to meet me, to have someone to speak for me."

Patient Care Advocates Owner, Alice Milton, said it is a situation her company is used to handling when a client has an emergency.

"The place that we seem to be most needed is when someone is taken urgently to an ER room", said Milton, "We are always there prior to their arrival and we immediately begin talking to the ER Physicians and staff."

Milton said her staff are all seasoned health professionals, used to navigating the often frustrating world of healthcare.

"Because we are in those situations all the time because we stay on top of how hospitals or various facilities are changing", Milton said, "And what their rules and parameters are and how they function we're able to go in and maneuver in those situations."

Whether it's securing the right treatment, correct medication, or acting as a liaison between doctors and family, Patient Care Advocates are there to make sure their clients get the best care possible wherever that patient is being treated and that includes senior care facilities. Peter Bisschop had lost hope he would be able to improve his mother's care until Patient Care Advocates stepped in to help.

"My mother's care became more stable, more certain and it was just taking the weight off my back", said Bisschop, "Because I was just at the point where I couldn't handle what was going on any more."

Some of Patient Care Advocates' clients don't have family nearby. That is the case for Lois Pittinger, who says having someone looking out for her is very comforting.

"They are well trained", Pittenger said, "And it's a piece of mind for me and for my family."
