4 Your Health: Childbirth exercise and alcohol brain drain

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- New research suggests even moderate drinking could lead to a decline in brain health.

British scientists tracked the alcohol consumption of more than 500 healthy adults for 30 years. Heavy drinkers had the highest risk of brain shrinkage in areas linked to memory and spacial navigation. But moderate drinkers were three times more likely to have a loss in brain volume than non-drinkers.

Higher alcohol consumption was also linked to a faster decline in language fluency.

Exercising during and after pregnancy

Women at risk for post partum depression may want to get out and exercise.

New research shows physical activity during pregnancy and after childbirth boosted women's mood and reduced depression symptoms. In fact, any type or intensity of exercise was beneficial for these women.
