Horse rescue draws multi-agency response on Mt Lemmon

Posted: Updated:

A rescue mission for a horse drew a multi-agency response on Mount Lemmon Friday.

“She just fell down one of the ridges and ended up just falling 100 yards, maybe 150. I thought she was dead,” said owner James Nourtsis, speaking of his horse Lively Leslie.

Two riders were out on Red Ridge Trail when it happened. The 911 call came in about 4pm. The horse fell through thick brush, that needed to be cut through for the horse to be led out.

“We are here for humans, but if we don’t provide some assistance -- the humans that those animals belong to may end up getting hurt,” explained Manuel Montano, who volunteers with Southern Arizona Rescue Association.

The rider was not injured. Lively Leslie has lacerations and swollen ankles, but the owner believes she will be ok.

“That's like my daughter!” said Nouirtsis. “Lively Leslie is my daughter and these people out here helped me save my daughter."
