PHOENIX (AP) - The speaker of the Arizona House abruptly cancelled a planned "Thank You to the Legislators" lunch paid for by the national group that pushed a massive private school voucher expansion that passed early this month.
Speaker J.D. Mesnard's decision to cancel Thursday's lunch comes two weeks after Republican Arizona lawmakers narrowly approved the voucher expansion.
Mesnard called the lunch ill-timed because emotions are still running high at the Capitol over the voucher expansion. Democrats who opposed the voucher plan passed on April 6 continue to keep the issue in the forefront.
The school choice group says the event wasn't intended as a political move and started as a way for special needs students visiting the Capitol to meet lawmakers.
Groups regularly provide free lunches for lawmakers during the legislation session.
