Rescue searches for home for dogs of La Encantada shooting victim

TUCSON -

An Arizona rescue group is looking for the perfect forever home for two Labrador retrievers who lost their owner in last week’s La Encantada mall murder-suicide.

Eliot Cobb, 65, was shot and killed by former TFD Captain, Fred Bair, at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill. Bair also shot and injured his ex-wife before turning the gun on himself.

Cobb’s death has left his 8-year-old lab, Diesel, and 10-year-old lab, Shasta, without their dad. He'd had the dogs for about six years.

“They're loving, sweet, great dogs, super affectionate. They were really established with him. And they were really spoiled,” said Jennifer O’Connor of Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue. “So now we're looking for a home for them.”

O’Connor has taken the dogs in as a temporary foster. The group is testing potential permanent adopters for the pair, but they are still taking applications.

“You would need to put in an adoption application and get a home visit,” she said. “And if these two are of a particular interest, note on your email that you're particularly interested in this pair.”

O’Connor said Shasta and Diesel have been restless ever since last week’s tragedy.

“You can already tell that they're affected. Just the fact that he didn't come back and the family has been packing his household, which is very stressful,” she said. “You can tell they're unsettled and don't know what's happening.”

O’Connor said the pair must stay together, no matter what.

“It's a little personal to us to find them a really great home,” she said. “We want to find someone who's going to give them an equally spoiled home.”
