4 Your Health: Memory care community may be guilt free option for families

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- A family coming to terms with a loved one suffering from a cognitive disorder, such as Alzheimer's or dementia, can be painful process. And often the difficult decisions that must be made come with a large dose of guilt.

After a loved one is diagnosed with a cognitive disorder many families attempt to care for that person, only to eventually realize they are not equipped to provide that care. But many assisted living communities now have their own memory care facilities. Arroyo Gardens Assisted and Independent Living Community Liaison, Valerie Pinon, said these facilities give families an option that may the best choice for the patient and the family.

"Afterwards they really do realize how beneficial the community living environment really is, the healthcare resources that are available to them and then the full transition, knowing that they are going to have a safe environment, knowing that they are going to have certified care givers around the clock", said Pinon, "And as they see that their loved one is doing so much better I think that that guilt just gradually declines."

Pinon recommends getting started by researching different communities in your area.

"Maybe starting out on line and then doing some footwork, calling different communities, gathering information and then narrowing it down and seeing which communities are worth visiting."
