4 Your Health: Another danger for firefighters and a better way to treat children with diabetes

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- An artificial pancreas is a safe and effective way to improve blood sugar in diabetic children.

The automated insulin delivery system, already used in adults and teens was tested on five to eight year olds with type one diabetes.

After using the system, the patient's blood sugar control was significantly better than when they used their usual insulin pump.

Firefighter's higher risk for heart attack

A new study finds burning buildings aren't the threat to the lives of firefighters.

Researchers found extreme heat and physical exertion can trigger blood clots that increase the risk of a heart attack. Firefighters who wore monitors during fire simulation exercises showed drops in blood pressure, increases in body temperature and other signs of heart strain.

Cardiac events are responsible for about 45 percent of on-duty firefighter deaths every year.
