TUSD feeding students in after-school program

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON – Palo Verde High School students are enjoying a new program that provides free after-school meals.

“It's better than school lunch,” Eric Oum said. “It's actually great. And the lady is great. She is always nice.”

More than half of the school's students qualify for free or reduced lunch. All the students get to take advantage of the free dinner. It is funded by a federal grant.

Principal Eric Brock said the program usually feeds 80 to 100 students per day.

“I was formerly a coach here,” Brock said. “And I realized that my athletes, if they didn't eat a dollar burger at home, sometimes they didn't eat for that night.”

The program has expanded to Catalina and Pueblo High Schools. Brock said the district is hoping to eventually serve students at 7 schools.
