Tucson- Vitamin D is known to be good for bone and muscle health but it could also keep you from getting sick.

A new worldwide study focused on adults with low vitamin D because they are more susceptible to respiratory infections.

Researchers found regular vitamin D supplements helped cut their risk of respiratory illness in half. Even those without a deficiency showed some benefit from the supplements but taking too much vitamin D can cause other health problems.

Over prescribing Opioids means more addiction

Opioid How often a doctor prescribes opioids could affect a patient's risk of becoming addicted to these drugs.

Harvard researchers looked at over 375-thousand ER visits involving more than 14,000 doctors. Patients most frequently prescribed opioids were 30 percent more likely to become long term opioid users than those seen by other doctors at the same hospital.

Premies survival rate is up

Very early pre-term infants are more likely to survive than just a decade ago.

A new government study looked at more than 4,000 infants born between the 22nd and 24th week of pregnancy. Survival rates increased from 30 to 36-percent from 2000 to 2011 and these babies were also less likely to have neurological problems.

Experts said advances in care for expectant moms and newborns have helped improve survival rates.
