4 Your Health: Protecting older loved ones from exploitation

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- The attorney general's office in Arizona estimates that over 7,000 cases of exploitation of seniors takes place every year. But there are signs to look out for to protect older loved ones in your life...

Total Care Connections CEO, Daniel stringer, runs a company that provides home care and living facility care to seniors and veterans. Stringer said the health care providers who work for him are trained to recognize seniors who may be being exploited.

"We look at different types of abuse that happens", said Stringer, "From emotional, to neglect, to financial and then physical are kind of the four main categories."

Stringer said in many cases the person being abused or taken advantage remains silent out of fear or shame. Whatever the situation there are signs to watch for.

"If an elderly loved one doesn't want to share what they're spending their money on or if we are seeing any type of physical signs of abuse, that's a definite a huge red flag", said Stringer, "Any type of even minor things, we always want to look in to it, even a light bruise and then making sure that we are looking at their overall hygiene and well being."
