4 Your Health: Not enough sleep may be what ails you

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- A new study helps explain why many get sick when they don't get enough rest.

Researchers at the University of Washington took blood samples from 11 pairs of identical twins with different sleep patterns.

The twin who regularly got less sleep had a weaker immune system than his or her sibling, leaving them more vulnerable to illness. Experts said about one third of working adults get less than six hours of slumber a night.

Also, new research suggests if you want more time with your doctor don't be late for your appointment.

A Johns Hopkins study looked at over 23,000 doctor-patient interactions. When doctors perceived their clinics were running on time, they spent longer speaking to their patients. But when the physician felt behind, appointment times were shorter.

And putting on some Bob Marley tunes helps dogs relax.

Researchers in Scotland monitored heart rates, stress hormone levels and behavior of shelter dogs, as they listened to several genres of music. The pups became less stressed when they heard music and even had a slight preference for reggae and soft rock.

Experts said soft music could help calm animals in shelters and improve their odds of being adopted.
