4 Your Health: Fat harvesting used in plastic surgery

Posted: Updated:

Tucson- Plastic surgery for women and men remains a popular option for enhancing or reducing body parts. But surgeons are now recommending using something from your own body to compliment the sculpting process.

Fat harvesting is a plastic surgery procedure that basically takes fat from places where you don't want it and then have it put it in parts of your body where you do.

Dr. Gwen Maxwell, with Maxwell Aesthetics, said fat harvesting is a good option when considering plastic surgery.

"The best, softest, most nimble substance that we have and usually the most plentiful", said Maxwell, "Is your own fat.".

Dr. Maxwell said more and more women are now choosing to include fat harvesting in to their breast augmentation procedures.

"The trend in re-constructive surgery now is to sort of use fat as a scaffolding, as a building material, modeling clay if you will to help change the soft tissue components of the breast.

The procedure is often used in combination with implants to create a more natural look. Dr. Maxwell said besides breast augmentation procedures, the fat harvesting technique is always used to either reduce and enhance other parts of the body. That includes the face and another area made popular by a certain reality TV family.

"The Kardashians have popularized a large voluminous posterior", Maxwell said, "So it's used a lot in terms of a transfer to enhance the buttock region, that's very popular among younger women."
