Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Wilderness camp for kids over holiday break

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Saguaro National Park West will offer a three day Wilderness Camp for young people 11-14 years old December 28-30, 2016.

Participants explore the wilds of the park and experience the wonders of nature as they are guided by experienced and enthusiastic staff. Campers set up tents and string up tarps for shelter at their base camp, learn how to use a backpack stove to cook hot chocolate and soup, discover the desert’s secrets as they wander through the hidden washes searching for animals and their signs, and learn how to explore the outdoors safely. Signature events include watching twilight fall from base camp, exploring the desert after dark, and storytelling around the campfire.

Camp hours are Wednesday - 10:30-7:30, Thursday - 10:30-9:00, and Friday - 11:30-9:00

and end with a celebration and ceremony. While waiting for your child to hike out, please join us at the family campfire where hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows will be served at 30 minutes before pickup each night. Participants must be 11-14 years old as the camp experience is designed for the physical, intellectual, and emotional abilities of that age group.

For more information or questions, please contact Park Ranger Chip Littlefield at 733-5157, or by email at chip_littlefield@nps.gov. All registration documents can be found on our website at http://www.nps.gov/sagu/planyourvisit/wilderness-exploration-camp.htm. The camp fee is $40.00 per child. Space is limited and reservations are required. Scholarships may be available. Camp fees and registration paperwork must be received before the camp to ensure participation.

Registration is due no later than December 27, 2016.
