4 Your Health: No surgery required to lose unwanted fat

Posted: Updated:

For some, controlling their weight is a constant battle. But there is a medical facility in Tucson that performs a procedure that has helped hundreds of people not only shed unwanted fat but also shape up.

It's called CoolSculpting, a procedure that does not involve any surgery and literally freezes your fat away.

Mari Vasquez said since having children she's continued to struggle to lose the body fat around her midsection.

"I have two kids, so getting that stubborn fat away was so hard," said Vasquez. "No matter what I ate, no matter going to the gym five days a week, I just couldn't get rid of it."

Then Vasquez discovered CoolSculpting, a procedure that does not require surgery but works through a series of treatments where fat cells are actually killed off. After treatment, over a period of three or four months, the cells die and disappear forever. As that happens, the skin around the area tightens, creating a toned look.

Dr. Arun Rao, with Rao Plastic And Hand Surgery, said CoolSculpting is a very effective alternative to plastic surgery, which often involves going under the knife and a lot of recovery time.

"Non-invasive is important to the patient, as far as recovery time because the don't have to under anesthesia. They don't have to have any potential restrictions afterward, which is typical after surgery."

Rao said the treatment can also eliminate extra fat in just about every problem area a person might have.

"It can be used to treat different areas throughout the body", Rao said, "It can be used to treat the chin, the arms the abdomen, the flanks, the inner and outer thighs."

While other facilities may offer CoolSculpting, Rao recommends having a board certified plastic surgeon perform the procedure so that all options are considered.  Vasquez said, for her, CoolSculpting was the right choice.

"It's minimal pain, it's quick, there's no down time," Vasquez said. "It's the way to go if you have that stubborn fat."

According to Dr. Rao, as long as a healthy lifestyle is maintained, the original results from the CoolSculpting treatments will be permanent.
