Arizona Alum Terry Francona's Indians Fall In World Series In Dramatic Game 7 VS Cubs

Posted: Updated:

Here's a compilation of tid-bits on the Cubs victory in the World Series over the Cleveland Indians from various AP articles:

The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions for the first time since 1908 after beating the Indians, 8-7 in 10 innings at Cleveland. The Cubs blew a 6-3 lead in the eighth before Ben Zobrist (ZOH'-brihst) hit a tiebreaking, RBI double and Miguel Montero singled home the eventual deciding run. Rajai (RAH'-zhahy) Davis tied it for the Indians with a two-run homer and added an RBI single in the 10th before the Cubs became the seventh team to win the series after trailing three games to one.

Cubs outfielder Ben Zobrist was named the MVP of the World Series after supplying the tiebreaking double in the 10th inning of Game 7. Zobrist batted .357 in the series with two doubles, one triple and two RBIs. His heroics come a year after he batted .261 with four doubles and five runs scored in the Royals' World Series triumph over the New York Mets.

Former University of Arizona standout Terry Francona, the Cleveland Indians Manager, said, ""That was quite a series, and you knew somebody was going to go home happy, but they (Cubs) deserve a lot of congratulations."

"It's gonna hurt," said Francona, "It hurts because we care. But they need to walk with their heads held high because they left nothing on the field. All the things we ever ask them to do, they tried until there was nothing left."
