Crime Trackers: PCSD investigating jewelry heist

Posted: Updated:

Thieves went through a great deal to break into a jewelry store recently.

It happened at Oracle and Rudasill roads on Oct. 8.  Pima County Sheriff’s Department burglary detectives said the suspects broke through  through safety glass to get into Trinity Diamonds. Once they were inside, they reportedly broke into some locked storage cases. They thought they got away with a big bag of diamonds.

In video News 4 Tucson obtained of the burglary, the thief is seen breaking into the store using a rock. Detectives said he did not plan the burglary out very well. Det. Kurt Dabb, the case detective, said the victim said “the individual looked dorky.”

Joanne Zich owns the store. She said the thief walked away with cubic zirconias and fake stones.

When he left the store, she said, “he dropped them along the way, all the way to his car. He did this when the restaurant next door was open, so everybody saw him. So he wasn't even a very bright thief.”

However, what he did steal is not of value to anyone except Zich.

“It's really sad because even as I looked into turning it into my insurance claim, was it worth it? He got no gold, no diamonds," she said. "I mean, we don't leave that stuff out in our store .”

The total cost for loss and damages is over $11,000.  She said the insurance company is not covering all of the damages.

She has a message for the thief, “crime does not pay. It really doesn't.”

Dabb said the thief left behind DNA when he cut himself going through the door.  It has been sent off to a crime lab for analysis.

He is asking the public for help in finding a woman and a man as persons of interest.

The two had been in the store hours before the heist.
