Sabino's Drew Dixon named Jack in the Box Player of the Week

Posted: Updated:

Week 7 was a tough decision for Jack in the Box Player of the Week.

Mario Padilla for Salpointe Catholic had a huge game with five touchdowns, Wyatt Jeffries from Empire put up 223 yards and three touchdowns.

But Sabino's Drew Dixon is this week's Player of the Week after a huge game against defending state champ Pusch Ridge.

Thanks to the emergence of quarterback Alex Bell, Dixon has been able to play Swiss Army knife for the no. 1 Sabercats.

Sabino senior, Drew Dixon has long starred at quarterback for the Sabercats. At the end of last year, Coach Jay Campos made a decision to move around his best player.

"He's in different spots and we've been doing things with him over the years,” said Campos. “The difference is, we'll have different people doing those different things, but Drew can do it all, so we just allow him to do what he does best."

The result is dangerous for defenses.

Dixon scored five touchdowns, three different ways. He plays quarterback, running back and receiver. By doing everything on the field, Dixon opens up room for his teammates. Sabino is now the favorite in Class 3A.

"My versatility to use my athleticism around the field, I really like it," said Dixon.

The Arizona-commit is ready to stay in his hometown for the next four years.

"I’m really excited to be able to play in front of all my family, friends, teachers, coaches,” he said. “It'll be fun."

At the next level, he is likely a wide receiver, or maybe a quarterback. For Sabino, he does a little of everything, and his versatility may be the key to a state title for the Sabercats.
