New project helps students "find their voice"

TUCSON -

Some Tucson kids are “finding their voice” through a program launched by an international opera singer.

The “Finding Your Voice” program debuted Monday in Tucson through the Boys and Girls Club.

It is the first of its kind to be offered for young people through the Canales Project.

The program, founded by Carla Dirlikov Canales, an international opera singer, focuses on self-discovery, cultural celebration and performance.

Young people are invited to participate in the three-day classes.

The sessions explore issues of identity, culture, perseverance-through-adversity and more.

“I’d really encourage us to think about what we have in common," Carla Dirlikov-Canales said. "If there was one message I’d like to leave with people, it’s that there is a lot of love in the world and a lot of kindness.”

Eve Woods, who is taking the classes, said, “I actually got to meet somebody that’s been through a lot of family issues and made it somewhere really big in life.  And she taught me never to give up on what you believe in or what your goal is.”

The hope is this will prompt students to explore their identities and create stronger bonds between diverse communities.
