Crime Trackers: Convenience store falling victim to increase in beer thefts

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON -

In a two-week period, a local convenience store has been hit six times by the same thieves. In the last incident, they took beer skips to a different level.

“On Sept. 7, they walked into the store and one of the clerks behind the counter was threatened,” said Pima County Sheriff’s Department Det. Shawn Degan. “There was an implied weapon involved in that.”

It happened at the convenience store at Country Club Road and Ajo Way.

“They walked in the store, bypass the counter and the clerk, [and] head straight into the beer cooler,” said Degan. “They grab anywhere from six to nine 30-packs of beer and right back out the door.”

So far, PCSD has identified three suspects. They are looking for as many as five different people associated with a vehicle involved with the incident; a green Jeep Cherokee.

After five thefts, the store began locking the beer cooler after 2 a.m.

“One of the suspects grabbed the door, realized it was locked and forcefully yanked on it,” said Degan. “[They] broke the lock, opened the door and went right in and took the beer, and walked out.”

Sheriff Chris Nanos is concerned for the safety of the employees and the public.

“We can’t dismiss that, oh it’s a beer skip, it's not,” he said. “These individuals are getting more and more aggressive, and we need to find them.”

Anyone with information is advised to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
