Tucson Athletes Do Well On Wednesday In Rio; Update on Olympians with U of A & Old Pueblo ties

With the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in its 12th day of competition, there are six University of Arizona and Tucson Olympians that are either still competing in events or waiting for their events to begin throughout the rest of the Olympics.

Current U of A Track Volunteer Coach Bernard Lagat (USA) competed in the first round of the Men’s 5000m today and finished 17th overall in the standing, fifth in Heat 1 with a time of 13:26.02 seconds, landing him a spot in the Final on Saturday, August 20th at 5:30 P.M.

Former U of A track and field standout Pao Tonnesen (Spain) has competed in several events today, as part of the Men’s Decathlon. In the 100m, Tonnesen finished 32nd overall, eighth in the first heat, with a time of 11.32 seconds.  In the long jump, Tonnesen finished 15th overall, tenth in Group A with a distance of 7.33m. In the shot put, Tonnesen finished 22nd overall, tenth in Group B with a distance of 13.69m, while finishing 17th overall in the high jump, finishing 12th in Group A with a height of 2.01m. Tonnesen ranked 16th overall in the 400 m, finishing in 50.81 seconds.  

Tucson-born Corben Sharrah (USA) competed in the Men’s Individual Cycling of BMX, finishing fifth in the seeding round with a total of 34.89 points. The Amphi High School graduate placed fifth in the seeding round granted him a spot in the fourth heat of the quarterfinals, which will be on Thursday, August 18th at 9:42 A.M.

Former U of A standout runner Sage Watson (Canada) concluded her competition at the Olympics in round three of the semifinals of the 400m hurdles coming in fourth place, finishing with a time of 55.44 seconds, which wasn’t enough for her to qualify for the finals on Thursday, August 18th. Watson advanced to the semifinals by placing second in heat six of the first round with a time of 55.93 seconds.  She'll take part in Canada's 4 By 400 Meter Relay.  

Former U of A golfer Alejandra Llaneza (Mexico) completed the first round of the Olympic Women’s Golf Competition with a score of 73, with +2 to par. Round two will resume Thursday, August 18th at 3:30 P.M.

Former U of A standout diver Rafael Quintero (Puerto Rico) will compete in the Men’s Diving 10m Platform qualifying round on Friday, August 19th at 8:00 P.M.

Tucson-resident Ben Kanute (USA) will compete in the Men’s Individual Triathlon Final on Thursday, August 18th at 7:00 A.M.
