Collier Elementary students send Olympic luck to Lagat

TUCSON -

Local elementary school students are sending some Olympic luck to Bernard Lagat.

Bernard Lagat is a world champion runner, 5-time Olympian and honorary Collier Elementary Cougar. The children he has inspired are trying to return the favor as Lagat goes for Olympic gold.

Lagat ran beside the Collier Elementary students at the school’s annual Jog-a-Thon. His fifth Olympic games was the perfect opportunity for students, like fifth grader Taylor Devore, to say thank you.

“He runs with us and it's like a special thing that he does," said Devore. "He wishes us luck, so we're wishing him luck.”

Collier Elementary principal, Lisa Langford, hopes their special video message to Lagat will teach her students that they can also leave a lasting impression.

“They can make a difference," said Langford. "They can help someone that needs help or in this case they can propel someone to excel and do their best."

Lagat has yet to respond to the student's message, but he is working hard toward his first Olympic gold medal. Lagat has qualified for the men's 5,000 meter final on Saturday.
