Local Olympian rides to Rio

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON- A Tucsonan is headed to the Olympics to compete in the BMX portion of the games.

Corben Sharrah, 24, said his event does not start until August 17. He said he'll be heading to Rio in six days. He chose to miss the opening ceremonies in order to train.

"Might as well stay the extra couple of weeks and train and get ready and be prepared instead of having a couple weeks in Rio to be there for the opening ceremonies," said Sharrah.

He said he was an alternate in the London 2012 Olympics.

In June, he qualified to be a starter for Team USA in the 2016 Olympics.

"I definitely think I could compete for a medal and go there strong and do well," he said.

Sharrah said he is thankful to his family and community for their endless support.
