More air quality warnings in Arizona

Posted: Updated:

According to the Associated Press officials with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality say they are seeing a big increase in the number of air quality warnings this year.

In Maricopa County, 18 alerts have been issued this year. Compare that with 7 in 2015 and 11 in 2014.

Officials say the increase is due to a change mandated by federal officials.

In the past alerts were only issued when ozone levels exceeded 75 parts per billion. Alerts are now issued when levels exceed 70 parts per billion.

Three alerts have been issued in Pima county this year.

Government officials hope that by increasing air quality standards they will be able to reduce asthma attacks, hospital visits, and premature deaths.
